The divorce between reality television star Kim Kardashian and New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries resulted in a considerable amount of media backlash toward Kardashian, coming just 72 days after their wedding. Specifically, some critics have suggested Kardashian planned the wedding, which was televised on Kardashian's TV program and subsequent divorce in order to profit from endorsements and media attention.
A source who claims to be close to Humphries says that the couple has yet to begin discussing possible divorce settlements. The source said that, "Kim had no intention to stay married to him, and she just got married to make money." The source further added, "He and his team wouldn't go forward if they didn't believe that they could prove this [in court.]"
A legal representative for the Kardashian family recently told reporters that the families of both Kardashian and Humphries may be required to testify in court, as a judge determines whether the marriage was a premeditated fraud. The case is expected to go to trial by the end of the coming summer. Because of an "open policy" on popular cases in Kardashian's home state, the divorce hearing could be broadcast live on TV. Sources say that the only way for Kardashian to avoid a televised trial is to agree to Humphries' request for an annulment or sign a financial settlement to finalize the divorce.
Kardashian has said that she did not expect the intense backlash that followed her divorce from Humphries. She countered the accusations against her, arguing "If this was a business decision and I really made all that money that everyone claimed we made from the wedding and it was just for TV, I'm a smart businesswoman; I would have stayed married longer. This is a bad business decision."
